Opening up a world of education

Children love to learn. If they are denied access to knowledge, we also deny them the opportunity to change their lives for the better.

Hamad Bin Khalifa University graduate Abdulaziz Al-Homaid from Qatar was presented with an opportunity to participate in a PEIC programme when he was still an attending student. The programme was developed to tackle issues related to Humanitarian Data.

The United Nation’s Office for Coordinated Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in partnership with EAA hosted an inaugural class of Fellows at The Hague in June and July 2018. The programme focussed on four areas, Data Science, Data Storytelling, Predictive Analytics, and User Experience Research.

Throughout the fellowship period, Abdulaziz interacted with a number of experts at the Centre for Humanitarian Data as well as through remote engagement with experts from field offices as well as a range of humanitarian partners, including the International Federation of Red Cross, Red Crescent Societies, International Displacement Monitoring Centre, International Organisation for Migration, and the World Food Programme.

Marking the completion of the programme, the Centre hosted an event with presentations by each Fellow to showcase their projects where an interactive discussion moderated by Ben Parker, Senior Editor at IRIN News took place.

Abdulaziz is currently employed with our partners Qatar Computing Research Institute and implementing skills he gained from the programme.

"Humanity will not overcome the immense challenges we face unless we ensure that children get the quality education that equips them to play their part in the modern world." -- HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser
