Opening up a world of education

Children love to learn. If they are denied access to knowledge, we also deny them the opportunity to change their lives for the better.

EAC and RISE International have teamed up to provide 24,000 out of school children (OOSC) in Angola’s Benguela, Bié and Luanda provinces with quality primary education.

RISE International was originally founded as the African Refugee Committee (ARC) in 2001, which brought relief, development and support to refugees of the 27-year Angolan civil war in Namibia and Zambia. When the war ended in 2002, an entire generation was left illiterate – RISE committed to help reconstruct Angola, building primary schools in rural areas. Though the Ministry of Education has concentrated its efforts primarily in urban areas, RISE has maintained its focus on bringing educational opportunities to children in Angola’s remote, nearly inaccessible areas. Since 2003, RISE has built 159 schools and over 103,000 students have been impacted.

In partnership with EAC, RISE International is implementing the Schools for Angola project in the provinces of Benguela, Bié and Luanda. The project is a two-year initiative, seeking to enrol 24,000 OOSC and construct 25 new schools. In the main, RISE International aims to facilitate educational access by providing the necessary school infrastructure to children who have been impacted by war and its aftermath, poverty, disease and a lack of basic social services. Through partnerships with local government and officials from the Ministry of Education, the project will also be able to provide essential materials, such as desks, chalkboards and textbooks, as well as hire school teachers.

At the project’s conclusion, RISE International has an agreement in place to handover the newly-constructed schools to the target communities and local education authorities.
